A USB-C hub can turn a small laptop into a useful website workstation: a larger screen for editing, a keyboard and mouse, and a card reader for product photographs. The buying mistake is counting sockets before checking what the laptop can send through them.

Start with three questions, not seven ports
For a business owner updating WordPress, uploading catalogue photos and answering enquiries, the right hub is the one that removes a specific bottleneck. Write down the laptop’s exact model, the monitor’s required resolution and refresh rate, and the accessories you use together. Then check these three independent capabilities in the laptop manufacturer’s documentation.
USB-C socket → three separate checks
- Data: can the port communicate with your peripherals?
- Display: does that port support DisplayPort Alt Mode for the hub’s HDMI output?
- Charging: can the laptop accept USB-C Power Delivery through that port?
The connector’s shape alone answers none of those questions.
A laptop can recognise a mouse through the hub yet show no picture on the monitor. That does not automatically mean the HDMI cable is faulty: the host port may lack video output. The hub’s USB-C data socket does not output video or provide laptop charging. Its PD-IN socket is charging-only. There is no Ethernet socket. These distinctions matter more than the “7-in-1” headline; Anker’s UK product page lists the exact configuration.
The charging calculation that prevents a disappointing purchase
Do not read “100W Power Delivery” as “100W reaches my laptop”. Anker reserves 15W for hub operation and specifies a maximum 85W laptop output with an appropriate 100W charger and cable.
Worked planning example: suppose your laptop normally uses a 65W USB-C charger. Feeding that same 65W charger through this hub gives a nominal budget of 65 − 15 = 50W, before considering the power profiles actually negotiated. That is not a measured charging result, and it is not equivalent to the original 65W connection. Under demanding work, a power shortfall can mean slower charging or battery drain.
Check the charger’s output on the particular USB-C port, not just the total wattage printed on a multi-port charger. Sharing a charger with a phone can change the available allocation. The cable, charger, hub and laptop all need compatible power support.
If the laptop can retain its original direct power connection, you may not need hub charging at all. If it requires more than 85W for your normal workload, this model will not replace that supply at full power. Keep the manufacturer’s suitable charging arrangement or choose a dock whose delivered power meets the requirement.
Is 4K at 30Hz a problem for website editing?
Resolution and refresh rate solve different problems. 4K describes the pixel grid; 30Hz describes how often the screen can refresh. A sharp static page can still feel less fluid when scrolling or moving windows than it does at 60Hz. That matters when you spend hours comparing a page preview with the WordPress editor.
For occasional content changes, 4K30 may be an acceptable compromise. For an all-day 4K desk, put confirmed 4K60 support on your requirements list and check the entire chain: laptop port, hub, cable and monitor. Buying a 4K60 monitor will not remove this hub’s 4K30 limit.
For two external screens, start again with the exact laptop’s supported display count and operating system. Two connectors on a different dock do not by themselves prove that both screens can show independent desktops. The A8346 itself has only one HDMI output.

Run this acceptance check before relying on the hub
- Connect the screen alone. Select the intended resolution and refresh rate in display settings. Confirm that text is legible and the desktop extends or mirrors as intended.
- Add everyday peripherals. Open your actual website editor, use the keyboard and mouse, and check that reconnecting the laptop restores the setup.
- Import a disposable sample folder. Check the destination files open correctly. Do not use your only copy of important photographs for troubleshooting.
- Check power during normal work. Note any slow-charger warning or falling battery level. A charging icon alone does not prove the supply meets the workload.
- Try sleep and wake. Confirm the monitor and peripherals return without a repeated unplugging routine.
