A small shop should choose its ecommerce platform around the work it must do every week—not the largest feature list. If you want to compare the buying options now, see Shopify’s current UK plans, WooCommerce’s cost model and Krystal’s managed WordPress hosting. These are direct supplier links, not affiliate-tracked links. The useful question is which combination makes your checkout, stock, content and support manageable.
Start with the order journey, not a platform demo
Write down how a real order reaches the customer. A Formby maker selling a few products for local collection has a different problem from a shop dispatching hundreds of variable-size items. List how buyers find a product, choose an option, pay, receive confirmation, collect or receive the parcel, request a return and ask a question. The platform has to make that complete journey reliable.
Our local collection and shipping checklist goes deeper on one easily missed part of this decision: a collection option that appears at the right stage but gives customers inadequate collection instructions.
What are you actually buying?
| Question | Practical difference |
|---|---|
| Who hosts it? | Shopify bundles hosting; WooCommerce runs on hosting you choose. |
| Who maintains it? | Shopify manages its platform; a WooCommerce site needs a WordPress update and backup owner. |
| How do you extend it? | Compare Shopify apps with WooCommerce extensions by total cost and ongoing support. |
| What if you move? | Both need an export and migration plan; themes and integrations can require rebuilding. |
Neither side wins universally. Shopify’s UK pricing page shows the subscription and third-party payment fees by plan; WooCommerce’s pricing page describes free core software with hosting, payment processing and optional extensions as separate costs. Those published terms can change, so check the live pages before committing rather than basing a multi-year decision on a promotional headline.
A better five-line cost model
For each option, calculate a realistic 12-month total: platform or hosting + theme/design + required apps or extensions + payment processing + support/maintenance. Add one-off build or migration work separately. Do not equate “free plugin” with “free store”, or a hosted subscription with zero design and app costs.
As an illustrative worksheet—not a quote—suppose a shop needs product variants, local collection, a stock feed and abandoned-checkout messages. Mark each as included, paid add-on, custom work or not available on each candidate plan. Then cost only the necessary features. If one requirement needs three extensions or apps, include their renewals and the work of keeping them compatible. A low monthly headline may reverse once your actual workflow is priced.
Where Shopify is the simpler fit
Shopify is often sensible when you want a packaged store, prefer the platform to handle the hosting layer, and can deliver the required order journey using its built-in tools or a small, well-understood app set. Its UK plan comparison is the place to verify staff-account limits, payment terms and point-of-sale needs. Do not assume a feature shown on a higher tier is on the starting plan.
Test one representative product end to end during the trial: variant selection, a shipping or collection method, tax display, payment, confirmation and fulfilment. A visually polished theme is not proof that the difficult order path works.
Where WooCommerce earns its flexibility
WooCommerce makes sense when WordPress content is central to the business, you need control over hosting and the site’s structure, or your checkout and fulfilment need careful tailoring. That control also creates operational work. Check who will apply updates, watch for conflicts and restore the site when necessary. Our backup restore test explains why a backup tick-box is not the same as a recovery plan.
If you are pricing a managed route, inspect Krystal’s current WordPress options alongside any other host. Its page describes backups and a staging platform, but verify the specific plan’s limits and what “managed” covers for your particular plugins, store and email. Hosting choice does not replace a named person responsible for the checkout.
The decision test: can staff run it on a busy Tuesday?
- Add a product with the awkwardest real variant, not the easiest sample.
- Place a test order with the normal delivery or collection route and inspect every message received.
- Change stock after an in-person sale; confirm the storefront reflects it as expected.
- Refund or cancel a test order and record who performs the steps.
- Ask a staff member to update a product without the developer’s help.
- Write down the exit route: product, customer and order exports, domain control and any app-specific data.
Score each platform against these tasks, not against a generic “best ecommerce platform” list. A small catalogue with unusual collection rules may need more thought than a larger catalogue with routine shipping.
Our recommendation for a small local shop
Choose Shopify if its standard order workflow fits and you value the hosted operating model. Choose WooCommerce if you already rely on WordPress content or need deeper control—and have a credible maintenance plan. In either case, map the real checkout first. For a Formby, Freshfield or L37 business deciding how to sell online, ask Formby Web Design about the order journey and website design before paying for a build that solves the wrong problem.
