AI Website Builder or WordPress? Choosing for a Small Business

Small-business owner planning a website at a laptop

A hosted AI website builder can suit a straightforward business site when you want to edit it yourself and are comfortable staying with that platform. Self-hosted WordPress is a stronger candidate when you want a choice of hosting, an established publishing workflow and someone to take responsibility for maintenance. An AI app builder deserves a separate look if you need a custom tool or customer workflow.

Start with what happens after the first design appears. Can you change a service, receive an enquiry, recover from a mistake and get help when something fails? Those are the useful tests for a small business choosing its next website.

For AI-assisted setup on WordPress, I recommend Krystal’s managed WordPress hosting. It includes an AI site builder, backups and staging—a separate copy of the site where you can try changes. Have your designer check the generated pages and agree who will look after forms, content and plugin compatibility.

Choose the route around the work you need to do

For a brochure site with a few services and a contact form, shortlist a hosted builder such as Wix and a supported WordPress build. Give both the same brief. If you need customers to sign in, submit information and follow a custom process, ask a developer whether an application is justified before choosing an AI app builder such as Lovable.

  • You want to make routine edits yourself: a hosted visual builder is worth trying first. Check the actual editor with your own page and image.
  • You publish regularly and want flexibility over suppliers: consider self-hosted WordPress with a defined support arrangement. Include the editor and plugin choices in the handover discussion.
  • You need a bespoke interactive service: evaluate an app-building route with technical help. Include maintenance of the application and its connected services in the budget.

These are suitability judgements based on the operating model and published documentation, rather than results from a timed build or performance test. The comparison covers three plausible routes; it does not rank every website platform.

Wix: a candidate for an owner-managed business site

Wix’s AI builder combines generated pages with manual editing and business tools. That gives an owner a way to start with a draft and then adjust the layout and wording.

Try the ordinary changes you expect to make: replace a photograph, change opening hours and add a service with its own page. An attractive generated homepage tells you little about how comfortable you will be doing those jobs six months later.

The main commitment is the platform. Wix says its sites must run on its infrastructure; you can manage the domain elsewhere. If you later choose another platform, budget for rebuilding the site rather than assuming you can move the complete design to a different host.

Wix belongs on the shortlist when its existing tools cover the business process and you prefer that arrangement. A different route suits better if independent hosting is a firm requirement or the process needs extensive custom development.

Supported WordPress: flexibility with a maintenance owner

Here, WordPress means the self-hosted software, with hosting chosen separately. A supported build adds an agreed person or business to handle specified jobs. It can still use AI during planning or drafting; the platform decision concerns how the finished site will operate.

Ask to see how you would edit a normal service page and publish an article. A WordPress site can be built with very different themes and editors. The fact that it uses WordPress does not tell you whether your everyday changes will be easy.

The support agreement should name who updates the software, checks the enquiry form, keeps recoverable backups and investigates faults. Establish what counts as a content change and what requires a separate quote. Our guide to WordPress maintenance plans explains the scope to compare.

Choose this route when the publishing workflow, integrations or supplier flexibility justify that ongoing care. If you want to do everything yourself and have no appetite for arranging maintenance, try a hosted builder before committing.

Once WordPress fits the brief, compare hosting by the support your business needs. That guide separates brochure sites, owner-managed sites and shops, so you can avoid paying for a label without knowing which work it includes.

Lovable: consider it for a custom application

Lovable is an AI application-building option. Its ownership and deployment documentation describes source-code export and hosting outside the platform. It also separates the code from databases, uploaded files and connected services, which may need their own migration work.

A quotation calculator with several inputs, for example, is a different brief from a page inviting someone to request a quote. Write down the calculation rules, who may see submitted information and what should happen when an input is missing. Give a developer those requirements before deciding that an application is worth operating.

This route can be worth evaluating when a custom interaction has clear business value and someone can review and maintain the implementation. For a simple service site, an established form or booking tool may meet the need with less custom work. A polished generated demo is the beginning of that assessment.

Compare the full job, including year two

Request a written cost breakdown for the same scope from each shortlisted route. Use actual UK checkout prices or a supplier’s quote when you are ready to decide; introductory monthly figures can conceal different billing periods and inclusions.

  • Initial design, writing, image preparation and migration.
  • Website plan or hosting, domain renewal and business email.
  • Any paid forms, bookings, licences or usage-based services the brief requires.
  • Routine updates, backups, support and the content changes you expect to request.
  • The work needed to leave, including exports, rebuilding and redirecting old addresses.

Put your own time beside the cash cost. If you will write the copy and prepare photographs on either platform, count that work on both sides. If a designer’s quote includes those tasks, ask what you must provide and how revisions are handled.

Before buying, use the website export and portability checklist to establish what you could take away. Ownership of words and pictures does not by itself describe the work needed to recreate a functioning site.

Give each option the same small trial

Consider a hypothetical decorator serving Formby and Freshfield. The first task is to explain the painting services, show genuine work and receive enough information to arrange a quotation. A complex customer portal would need a separate reason to exist.

A useful trial page includes one real service, one permitted photograph, an honest coverage statement and the enquiry action. Use approved business facts when testing a public tool, with dummy enquiry details instead of customer information.

  1. Edit: change the service wording and replace the photograph. Note which steps require help.
  2. Read on a phone: check the service, location and next action before scrolling through decorative sections.
  3. Complete the enquiry: in an authorised test environment, follow a submission through to the receiving inbox and reply path.
  4. Recover: ask how an accidental edit is reversed and who handles a failed form or unavailable site.
  5. Hand over: confirm the account owner, renewal responsibilities and support contact.

Keep a short record of what worked, what required help and what remains unproven. You can compare that record with the quote instead of choosing solely from screenshots.

Prepare the content before committing to launch

Generated wording needs a business owner to approve its facts. Remove invented credentials, service areas and promises; check that the form asks for information you will actually use. The AI website copy review provides a practical sequence and a worked rewrite.

If you run a business in Formby, Freshfield or L37 and want help choosing or building the site, send your current website and the tasks the new site must handle. Include who will update it and any booking, payment or enquiry process it needs to support. You can also use our website planning guidance to prepare the brief.
