If your business domain has expired, contact the registrar or reseller that manages it immediately through a trusted route. Ask whether the name can still be renewed or recovered and what the provider needs from the authorised account holder. Check the website, business email and enquiry routes separately: an expired registration can affect more than the homepage.
Do not assume you have a fixed number of days to recover every domain. The registry, extension, registrar and stage of expiry affect the available options. If the name has already been released or registered by someone else, recovery is not guaranteed. Ask the provider for the current status and next step rather than buying a similar-looking name in a hurry.
Find the account that can act
Look for a known renewal record or the domain account in your business handover. The registrar manages the registration; the website host and email provider may be different companies. An agency or reseller may have arranged the registration for you, so the business may need to ask its authorised contact to act.
If you cannot identify the provider, use the relevant registry lookup to find the registrar and then use its independently verified support route. Public registration data may not show every owner detail or reseller. Keep the domain spelling exact, including the extension. A lookalike renewal notice is not evidence that the sender manages your name. Learn how to check a domain renewal notice through a trusted route.
Ask what stage the name has reached
Give the provider the exact name and ask whether it is active, expired, suspended, in a recovery process or no longer under your control. Ask whether the original account can renew it, what proof of authority is needed, and how you will receive confirmation. Do not send passwords, recovery codes or card details in an ordinary support message.
For .uk names, Nominet publishes its own renewal and suspension process. Generic extensions such as .com follow different registry and registrar arrangements. A registrar may have its own renewal terms, so neither a .uk timeline nor a generic-domain grace period is a safe universal promise. Check the current official guidance and the actual provider’s terms.
If the registration can be renewed, confirm the new expiry date in the trusted account after the provider completes the transaction. A paid invoice by itself does not establish that the registry record has been updated. Keep a record of who acted and when, without storing payment details in the handover document.
Keep customers able to reach you
If the website or domain email is unavailable, use an already established and verified contact route while the provider investigates. Tell staff which phone number or alternative inbox to monitor. Keep a separate record of enquiries received there and reconcile them after the normal route returns.
Avoid changing nameservers or rebuilding the site just because the domain expired. First establish whether the existing DNS service and hosting account are intact and who controls them. A hasty change can interrupt working services or obscure the original problem. If a new name is genuinely necessary, plan customer communication and the website move separately.
Check the business journey after renewal
The name returning in a browser is a start. Check the homepage and a representative service page, the contact route and any booking or checkout journey. Arrange a harmless, labelled test enquiry and verify that it reaches the intended inbox. Test sending and receiving business email with the people responsible for the mailbox; a missing message may need a separate mail investigation.
Results can differ while caches update, so record what was tested, where and when. If mail or the website still fails, give the relevant provider the exact symptom and recent changes instead of repeatedly editing DNS records. Ask who will investigate any gap.
Once the immediate incident is resolved, review the domain renewal and DNS checklist and website ownership audit. For a Formby, Freshfield or L37 business planning a website change, contact Formby Web Design to discuss the scope.
